Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for:
- People 65 and older
- People under 65 with certain disabilities
- People with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS
1. Part A – Hospital Insurance (Free for most)
Covers:
- Inpatient hospital care
- Skilled nursing facility care
- Hospice
- Some home health care
👉 Most people don't pay a premium for Part A if they or a spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for 10+ years.
2. Part B – Medical Insurance
Covers:
- Doctor visits
- Outpatient care
- Preventive services (e.g., screenings, vaccines)
- Durable medical equipment
👉 You pay a monthly premium for Part B (starts around $ 185/month in 2025 but can be higher based on income).
3. Part C – Medicare Advantage (Private Plans)
- All-in-one alternative to Original Medicare (Part A + B)
- Often includes Part D (prescription drugs), dental, vision, hearing
- Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare
👉 You still pay your Part B premium, plus any additional premium the plan charges.
4. Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage
- Helps pay for prescription medications
- Offered through private plans or included in some Medicare Advantage plans
👉 Costs vary: monthly premium, deductible, co-pays
📌 Penalty applies if you delay enrollment and don’t have other drug coverage.
Option 1: Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
- Add Part D (optional but recommended)
- Add a Medigap plan (optional for help with costs)
Option 2: Medicare Advantage (Part C)
- One plan that may include drug coverage, dental, vision, etc.
- Usually has lower upfront costs
✅ Initial Enrollment Period (IEP):
- 7-month window around your 65th birthday (3 months before, the month of, 3 months after)
🔁 Annual Enrollment Period (AEP):
- Oct 15 – Dec 7 each year
- Switch plans, join/drop Part D, or move between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare
✴️ Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment:
- Jan 1 – Mar 31: Switch MA plans or return to Original Medicare
